This weekend we strived to cover the race in its entirety. This obviously meant getting fans up-close and personal with their favorite drivers and teams. In addition to the obvious, it meant live blogging exclusive race weekend coverage from all pre-race, race and post-race activities. Truthfully, I felt privileged to be working with the new media department who was working overtime to roll out innovative web content that focused on you, the race fan.
In fact, my personal highlights from race weekend were getting to know the fans better. What can I say?-Race fans…you rule! Every day at the track, I looked forward to finding the next super fan that would claim the title “Fan-of-the-Day.” Featured here.
I also got the opportunity to interview the 33 most senior ticket holders, who shared their favorite race day memories and experiences with me. Their stories about the Indy 500 and IndyCar racing were unique and insightful. Don’t worry- clips from those interviews are on the way!
Another place I got to meet race fans was at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway campgrounds. There I learned about fan’s pre-race traditions. This meant the low down on partying, camping-out and cooking. While I was there, avid race fan, Jeff Wetzel hooked me up with some of his favorite recipes. One in particular stood out to me, it was called the “Fat Tatty Burger.” What was it? Just a burger topped with a fried egg, homemade chili, mustard and fresh onion fixings! Yahoo!
But where did I find the best fans on race day? The infield, of course! Specifically, turn three where the Snake Pit was in full force this year. Check out the footage we captured:
The race fans I encountered this weekend not only gave me their insight on the greatest spectacle in racing but also furthered my appreciation for the sport. I hope to see the same amount of enthusiasm this weekend for the Firestone 550K race at Texas Motor Speedway.
I also can’t forget to mention that @IndyCarNation had a great weekend on Twitter. Our fans made #Indy500 the 2nd trending topic in the WORLD! -Way to go! Also, for more pictures from the Indy 500 check out our IZOD IndyCar Series Flickr set here.
