The Road to Indy continues this weekend at Iowa Speedway for the final combined show of the 2010 season with the IZOD IndyCar Series. It’s also the final oval on the schedule for both Star Mazda and USF2000. More on this weekend’s event in just a few sentences…
When we last checked in, we were getting set for Indianapolis. By now you probably know that Wade Cunningham (Firestone Indy Lights), Conor Daly (Star Mazda) and Patrick McKenna (USF2000) won their respective series’ events in Indianapolis. Nice work, boys.
While hanging out in Indy, Road to Indy teams and drivers participated in the inaugural Road to Indy Summit May 26-28th at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. What an experience for these future stars of the IZOD IndyCar Series! The Road to Indy Summit included track tours with four-time Indianapolis 500 winner Rick Mears, a business of motorsports breakfast presented by Mazda and a VIP reception that connected Firestone Indy Lights, Star Mazda and USF2000 drivers with their future bosses-team owners from Firestone Indy Lights and the IZOD IndyCar Series. They also experienced IMS Hall of Fame Museum tours with the legendary Donald Davidson (see the photo) and to cap it all off, the three Road to Indy series’ event winners were introduced to the 300,000+ fans on race morning at the Indianapolis 500. Patrick McKenna, currently second in the USF2000 point standings, summed up the experience best when he said, “Every Road to Indy driver should be striving for the IZOD IndyCar Series after an event like this.”
Okay, back to Iowa now. What can we expect this weekend? Well, the young drivers in the USF2000 series will make their first visit to the fast, 7/8 mile oval. Uncharted waters for these guys, which usually means an unpredictable event. Star Mazda and Firestone Indy Lights competed there last year and put on one of the best shows of their respective seasons. Flat out, side by side racing….Iowa style!
