As we get started on 2011, a lot of things have happened over the last 12 months at JLF Designs. The helmet painting industry has been moving at an amazing pace and lots of new styles have emerged and even though I’ve been painting for 20 years, I have enjoyed my work more than ever thanks to some great projects with drivers such as Lewis Hamilton, Dan Wheldon and E.J. Viso who always brings us designs that are a challenge – and I love a challenge!
I also finally fulfilled a long-time ambition by going over to Indy for the Indy 500 and had a great weekend which was even better than I could have hoped for. I’ve been a fan of the INDYCAR for a long time just by watching it on the satellite stations in the UK and being at the IMS on race day will go down as one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. It’s not often a Brit like me gets to watch a race in 30+ degrees celsius temperatures and sunshine either!
2011 sees JLF Designs launch a new motorsport artwork service with a dedicated website where artwork can be commissioned or prints can be bought. I’ve been airbrushing for 20 years and have been planning to do this for a long time but the helmet paintwork is always so busy that I never seemed to find the time. So, a year ago I had a small studio built at my house so that I can hide away in the evenings and work into the night on these paintings! I try to produce photorealistic images that capture the detail and colours of motor racing and each picture takes countless hours, but I’ve been having a lot of fun doing them and hopefully race fans will enjoy seeing them too. We’re exhibiting at the Autosport International Show next week here in the UK, so we’ll be packing the van with helmets, paintings and prints and showing our work in front of the 75,000 people who attend over the 4 days.
Well, the order book here is getting pretty full and the pre-season rush is in full swing, so hopefully we’ll have some great new helmet designs to post on the blog soon. Have a great 2011 and let me know what INDYCAR or driver artwork you would like to see!
