Race fans in Indianapolis had plenty to cheer about today– despite being weeks away from the new season. As part of Macy’s Santa Tour, the official Macy’s Santa visited the track to receive letters from children. For each letter received, Macy’s will donate $1 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Fans were rewarded with free admission to the Hall of Fame museum, cookies and hot chocolate, as well as a special holiday story from the big guy himself.

As one IndyCar fan recently mentioned via Facebook: “I love to see the Indy(Car) drivers do good things for people. They need PR and more in the news. I really dont think that they get the mentions they deserve!”

The visit to Indianapolis Motor Speedway marks yet another charitable initiative supported by race fans this off-season. From children’s hospital visits to food drives and community donations, IndyCar fans, teams and drivers have all been decidedly, extra good this year.

Bitter cold and heavy snow covered the IMS grounds, but many fans came out, undaunted, to represent the racing community and support the charitable initiative. After visits to the Pagoda and Yard of Bricks, Santa headed inside to greet the crowd and tour the Museum. Upon closer examination of the Marmon Wasp, Santa declared that it might even be time to trade his sleigh in for an IndyCar.

Day 2 of the IZOD Brave New World shoot continued today. The rock band may have left the desert, but we had new guests. In preparation for print, video and web content in support of the 2011 IndyCar season, IZOD was working with six current IndyCar drivers, a former Indy winner and more models. The edited piece will feature Weezer, all of the above, fast cars, rock and roll and some more surprises. Bring on 2011.

The day started in darkness. Teams of people worked in the cold desert as the sun slowly rose, bringing some much needed warmth. Lights were installed. Stands were built. Cameras were tested. Props were checked and double checked. Models got their hair done. And the radio chatter was constant with last minute instructions.

The sun rising in California

Early in the morning

When the sun did finally make an appearance, the California desert had been transformed by IZOD into an elaborate set featuring Ryan Briscoe’s Team Penkse car, historic Indy Cars, lots of fashion, a big stage and plenty of excitement.

This weekend marks the second annual Winter Indy Tweetup– a grassroots, IndyCar fan event co-hosted by Monica Hilton and Elizabeth Lenzi. Today’s blog talks about the creation of the Winter Indy Tweetup and what these ladies are planning to make the second Winter Indy Tweetup a success. Interested in getting involved? Find a full schedule of events and find out more by visiting their website.

The season’s over…now what?

Like many IndyCar fans, the two of us found ourselves wondering exactly that as we headed home from the season finale at Homestead in October 2009. Without any races for five months, we would be forced to focus on the less exciting things in our lives like work, family, and friends. We knew something had to be done.

Throughout the season, each of us had attended tweetups organized by Pat Caporali, who was then at Vision Racing. We’d had a lot of fun meeting with other race fans and hearing from the special guests at each event, but now we’d be missing out on the good times until next season. Maybe it was the extreme heat in Miami or spending too long around ethanol fumes, but we started to wonder if we could try to organize our own off-season event to get us, and race fans like us, through that bleak time in our lives.

Two months and a lot of hard work later, smack dab in the middle of winter, a ray of sunshine shone down upon the Racing Capital of the World as 50+ race fans from all across the United States and Canada gathered for the first annual weekend-long Winter Indy Tweetup. We made new friends, exchanged race stories, rented out an indoor go-karting facility for the afternoon and, oh yeah, toured the legendary basement of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. We were even featured on local news station WRTV 6’s sports segment that night. One of us even met her future husband there. In short, it was completely epic. Before the weekend was over, we knew the Winter Indy Tweetup would be back again next year.

Once October rolled around again, we barely had time to mourn the end of another season. We hit the ground running and we’ve been going ever since, pulling out all the stops to make this year’s Winter Indy Tweetup even better than before.

The party starts on Friday night at McGilvery’s Pub and Eatery, where Autosport Radio with Don Kay is broadcast. Don himself will be there with videos of vintage Indy 500s, and IMS’s own historian Donald Davidson will be hosting a special trivia contest.

On Saturday, we have some great surprises planned for our own unique version of an IMS tour (and you’ve heard how we do IMS tours). After that, it’s on to the Greatest Spectacle in Go-Kart Racing – our wildly popular Grand Prix at Fastimes Indoor Karting sponsored by Fanimation. We’ll round out the night with the Main Event Party, where WIT attendees can mingle and have a shot at winning something from our long list of giveaways that have been donated by many IndyCar shops in the area.

Finally, on Sunday morning, WIT attendees can recover from the weekend and say goodbye to friends new and old at the classic and delicious Charlie Brown’s Pancake and Steakhouse in Speedway.

Needless to say, we’re beyond excited for this weekend. It combines our love for IndyCar with truly wonderful, dedicated race fans that we’re proud to call friends. Hope to see you there!

When you win an  IZOD IndyCar Series Contest, we dig deeper! Actually, we just request that the recipient take a photo with their new gear and send it to us- Nothing creepy, we just want to make sure our winners are happy. We also want to feature them on our website and Flickr account, because let’s face it- race fans are passionate people and we like to give appreciation when appreciation is due! Today we are featuring two of our contest winners, Courtney Braden and Rudi Womack:

Courtney Braden may not know this, but she was the first contest winner since we began “Contest Wednesdays” back in June.  She won a RT contest on Twitter (@IndyCarNation) by being the 50th person to retweet our message- pretty cool, so a big thanks to Courtney for being our guinea pig!

The 2010 IZOD IndyCar Champions

It’s only been a few days since Dario Franchitti won the 2010 IZOD IndyCar Series Championship…but I’ve already noticed some interesting online withdrawal. @IndyCarNation follower @NDcarTwit tweeted: “Think everyone should take a month off, and then let’s go again! Can’t wait till next Spring for more IndyCar racing!”

On our Facebook page, Wendy Gilbert wrote, “I’m in withdrawal already. Can’t wait until March 27th!” And another Facebook IndyCar fan – Leoth Wade, said” I’m ready now for the 2011 Indy 500. I can’t wait for it. Thanks to IZOD for making 2010 a great season.”

You really like your IndyCar racing.

Next week kicks off the countdown to the IZOD IndyCar Series finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway. As you know, competition is tight between championship contenders Dario Franchitti and Will Power, and naturally we want to know what’s on your mind.

So we are reaching out to the fans for questions for these drivers during their media ventures on Tuesday Sept. 28. Let’s get started- what do you want to ask them? All you have to do is leave a question on this blog and we will pick a few to have the drivers answer.

Championship Contenders: Franchitti v.Power

Who will it be?

We are also meeting with Target Chip Ganassi Racing  owner Chip Ganassi on Friday, Oct. 1, so if you have questions for him or the championship contenders this is the place to ask.

Questions that are selected will be included in a video segment that will be featured on

Super Friendly Fans

Prior to this trip everyone kept mentioning how friendly the fans were in Japan. I believed them – I’ve already seen that at the previous IndyCar races this season. Our fans are passionate, committed and of course, very nice. Motegi is a different experience. For one, it’s a different culture, language, continent and time zone. It’s also the adopted home track for Hideki Mutoh and Takuma Sato – not to mention Roger Yasukawa – and these fans really love these drivers.
