The Championship Trophy Unveiling

A vinyl-wrapped surf board displaying the colors of the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske car leaned against a railing behind Will Power as the IZOD IndyCar Series championship contender participated in a satellite media tour Sept. 28 at the swank W Hotel on South Beach in Miami.

“The first thing I thought of when I saw that was to take it out for a spin,” the Australia native said, “and with the weather the way it is they even have some surf on South Beach.”

The response to a question regarding the props for a championship contenders’ media day was quickly met with an uncompromising “no” look from Power’s fiancée, Elizabeth Cannon. Though watersports were part of his past on the east coast of Australia, the broken back he suffered in August 2009 probably overrules any such activity.

Power and Dario Franchitti joined models and IZOD Trophy Girl Cameron Haven poolside at the W Hotel for photo shoots with the new IZOD IndyCar Series Championship Trophy created by artist Ted Gall center stage and interviews with local and national media outlets.

“It’s pretty cool,” said Power, giving the 3-foot-tall, 45-pound piece of artwork the once-over. “Definitely not anything like I’ve ever seen for an auto racing trophy.”

Gall would appreciate the comments; it’s what he was seeking. The artwork is to depict man and machine intertwined. And what could be more intertwined than an IZOD IndyCar Series driver and his/her race car?

More media obligations are on tap for Sept. 29 before the contenders turn their focus to the Homestead-Miami Speedway oval and the Cafes do Brasil Indy 300 under the lights Oct. 2.
